Maud Sulter (1960 – 2008)

Maud Sulter was born in Glasgow and is best known as a photographer, educator, curator and writer of Scottish-Ghanian heritage, with much of her work focusing on the relationship between heritage, culture and place. She studied photography at the University of Derby, influenced by her maternal grandfather’s amateur photography.

Sulter spent much of her career pioneering Black Feminist discourse within the arts, and was a co-founder of the Black Women’s Creative Project alongside fellow artist Ingrid Pollard. This project, via magazine, created a variety of content ranging from “hair braiding, poetry and performance.”

Sulter was a lecturer of Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her legacy and impact upon British Fine Art photography is recognised today by continued inclusion of her work in several prominent exhibitions including Thin Black Line(s) (2011-12) at Tate Britain.
