Elaine Shemilt (1954 – )

Elaine Shemilt is known primarily as a fine art printmaker, although her work does not take a conventional approach to media. The artist uses a wide variety of media to present her work which often expresses a feminist approach, addressing the impact of war, conflict, censorship and constraint and psychologies.

Art historian Alan Woods has commented that over the continued course of Shemilt’s career, “her work initially focused on installation, the various printmaking media were used in an attempt to continue and develop the installations by other means”.

The artist grew up in Northern Ireland, and is a graduate of Winchester School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Her influence on Scottish printmaking is cemented in her establishment of a printmaking department at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee. She is currently professor of Fine Art Printmaking and a professional member and former President of the Society of Scottish Artists.
