Harry Benson (1929 – )

Glasgow-born photojournalist Harry Benson began his career aged just 13, when he began working for the Hamilton Advertiser newspaper. His career in photography was propelled by his roles at the London-based newspapers the Daily Sketch and Daily Express. In 1964, Benson travelled with the Beatles to America on their inaugural American tour, and afterwards continued to live and work in New York. His work has since appeared in several high-profile magazines such as Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker, and he has taken over 100 feature shots for People magazine.

Benson photographed many of the 20th centuries key figures, documenting several very important moments such as the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy and the funeral of Martin Luther King Junior. His contributions to photojournalism were realised in 2006 when he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Scottish Press Photography Awards, and again in 2009 when he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). In 2013 Harry Benson received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of St Andrews.
