Barbara Rae, CBE RA (1943 – )

Educated at the Edinburgh College of Art during the early 1960s, Rae is one Scotland’s highly celebrated contemporary Scottish artists. She has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions, nationally and internationally, for over 50 years. Rae’s first solo show was held in 1967 at the New 57 gallery, Edinburgh.

The artist has been the recipient of numerous awards, including her election as President of the Society of Scottish Artists in 1983, and is a member of the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Academy of the Arts. In 1999 she was awarded a CBE and received an honorary doctorate from Napier University, Edinburgh. Rae taught drawing and painting at Glasgow School of Art until 1996, and continues to practice her characteristically colourful and abstracted landscape scenes today.

In 2008 the artist was made an honorary graduate of the University of St. Andrews.
