Anne Redpath, RSA OBE (1895-1965)

Anne Redpath attended Edinburgh College of Art, continuing her studies on a postgraduate scholarship which allowed her to travel on the Continent to Bruges, Paris, Florence and Siena.

Much of Redpath’s work is influenced by her father’s career as a tweed designer in the Scottish Borders, viewing a connection between herself and her father’s use of colour in their respective practices. The artist was associated with the Edinburgh School, alluding to her use of vivid colour. She was also heavily inspired by post-Impressionist artists such as Matisse and Bonnard. A lot of her work is still life, drawing inspiration from textiles that add pattern and dimension to her work.

Redpath was president of the Scottish Society of Women Artists from 1944 to 1947 and was admitted to the Royal Scottish Academy as an Associate in 1947, and in 1952 she became the first woman painter Academician. In 1955 she was made an OBE for her work as an artist and Member of the Board of Management of Edinburgh College of Art.
