Sir William George Gillies C.B.E., L.L.D., R.S.A., P.R.S.W., R.A., was a prominent Scottish painter and art teacher, renowned for his landscape and still life paintings. Born in Haddington, East Lothian, he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art, where he later taught and served as Principal from 1960 to 1966. Gillies was influenced by the Scottish Colourists and Post-Impressionists of the early 20th century. His work captures the pastoral tranquility of the Scottish countryside, bringing together an astute understanding of composition with a delicate handling of light and colour. A highly respected figure in Scottish art, Gillies was knighted in 1970 for his contributions to art and education. His legacy endures through his paintings, which are held in major collections, including the Scottish National Gallery and the Royal Scottish Academy.
In 2024, the University of St Andrews acquired Road Round Rosebery into the Harry and Margery Boswell Collection. This acquisition marks the introduction of this artist to the Boswell Collection and is a signifant and welcome addition to this ever-expanding collection of Scottish art.
