Alberta Whittle (1980 – )

Alberta Whittle (born 1980, Bridgetown, Barbados) is a Barbadian-Scottish artist who practices
in print, sculpture, film, performance, and installation. Whittle aims to raise and challenge
questions surrounding colonial and historical legacies, race, oppression, and the climate crisis.

Whittle graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2011 and is a PhD candidate at Edinburgh
College of Art. Whittle was also the 2018 recipient of The Margaret Tait Award. Her work has
been exhibited at the 59th Venice Biennale, Venice (2022), GoMA, Glasgow (2019), The City Arts
Centre, Edinburgh (2019), National Art Gallery of the Bahamas (2018), FADA Gallery,
Johannesburg (2018), the Apartheid Museum, Johannesburg (2017), FRAMER FRAMED,
Amsterdam (2015), Goethe On Main, Johannesburg (2015), at the Johannesburg Pavilion at the
56th Venice Biennale, Venice (2015), and BOZAR, Brussels (2014).

Two sets of prints by Whittle were featured in the 2021 exhibition, Re-collecting Empire, at the
Wardlaw Museum. This included a brand new suite of prints created in response to objects in
the University of St Andrews’ Collections, offering insight into Whittle’s anti-colonial practice
and her attention to how art can create space for celebration, communion, healing, and
self-care.
