James Cumming (1922 – 1991)

Born in Dunfermline, James Cumming was a leading painter of the Edinburgh School and lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art, where he lectured until the 1980s.

His studies at Edinburgh College of Art were interrupted by the Second World War. He joined the Royal Airforce, travelling to Texas, India and Burma during his service.

Cumming was awarded a postgraduate scholarship from Edinburgh College of Art, which saw him travel to live and work on the Isle of Lewis. He was an influential member of the Edinburgh School. The School was well connected within Edinburgh’s art establishment and predominantly painted still life and Scottish landscape scenes in oils and watercolour.
