John Houston (1930 – 2008)

Born in Fife, John Houston studied and taught at Edinburgh College of Art. Houston had an early career as a semi-professional footballer with Dundee United F.C. before he began his career as a visual artist, eventually teaching at Edinburgh College of Art between 1955 and 1989.

Houston’s style is characterised by vibrant and expressive oils and watercolours which are often highly atmospheric and partially abstracted. Influenced by artists such as J. M. W. Turner and the Post-War American abstract expressionism, his paintings often feature a sea line or coastal subject which explores themes of energy.

Houston was married to fellow Boswell artist and contemporary Scottish painter, Elizabeth Blackadder.
