Carol Rhodes was born in Edinburgh and grew up in Nagpur, India, before being sent to a boarding school in the Himalayas, aged 12. Aged 14, she and her family moved back to the UK, first to Sussex and then to Dumfries.
Rhodes studied painting at the Glasgow School of Art in 1977 and graduated in 1982.
Roads, Buildings (Night) was inspired by two trips that she had made to her childhood home in Bengal, India. The composition is based on that of the final painting that Rhodes was able to complete before the symptoms of motor neurone disease left her unable to work.
Her work has been exhibited internationally and features in collections including the Tate, the Arts Council, the British Council, the Yale Centre for British Art and National Galleries Scotland.
