Steven Campbell (1953 – 2007)

Steven Campbell was a painter whose work had roots in performance and installation art. A graduate of Glasgow School of Art, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Pratt Institute in New York in 1982.

Campbell experienced rapid success and recognition whilst in America and returned to Glasgow in 1987 and remained in Scotland for the rest of his career. At Glasgow School of Art, he was a contemporary of Ken Currie and Adrian Wiszniewski, both represented in the Boswell Collection, as well as Peter Howson. Together the artists were dubbed as the ‘New Glasgow Boys’, all having a commitment to figurative painting. His work features strong colour palettes and often uses motifs such as skulls, birds and anthropomorphic foliage.
