Margaret Hunter (1948 – )

Margaret Hunter was born in Ayrshire and studied at Glasgow School of Art and Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, under Professor Georg Baseltiz. She continues to live in both Scotland and Berlin.

Hunter described her own work as being “Afro-Hibernian”, a phrase used to highlight the concern within her work which focuses upon her dual-heritage. Her work is primarily concerned with the human figure as a vehicle for expression and often explores her childhood memories, heritage and culture associated with time spent in Nigeria. Hunter’s work is also often sculptural in form, exploring influence of the ‘primitive’ in art and expressionism in general.

Hunter’s contribution to contemporary Scottish art has been recognised with several awards such as the European Woman of Achievement Award and the Wilforge Foundation Award.
