Callum Innes (1962 – )

Born in Edinburgh, Callum Innes studied drawing and painting at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, from 1980 -1984 before completing Postgraduate study at Edinburgh College of Art in 1985. Innes began exhibiting during the 1980s and had two major exhibitions at the ICA, London, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. He is currently recognised as one of the most prominent Abstract artists of his generation.

Innes works focus on the artistic process, with ‘shifts’ appearing in his works as each new painting builds on the previous. This method has been described as ‘un-painting’, as Innes removes layers of paint with turpentine instead of adding new paint, each finished painting is the arrested moment of an ongoing process.

Innes has been shortlisted for both the Turner and Jerwood Prizes, winning the prestigious NatWest Prize for painting in 1998.
