Bill Scott (1935 – 2012)

Bill Scott was a respected Scottish sculptor who was a dedicated supporter of the visual arts in Scotland. He trained at Edinburgh College of Art, and afterwards continued his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He returned to Edinburgh to teach and became the Head of the School of Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art.

Throughout his professional career, the artist often focused on small scale sculpture and used a varied repertoire of media including wood, bronze, marble, plaster and ceramic. His work explores human experience, particularly how we inhabit, use and define space and the influence of sculptors such as Brâncuși and Giacometti.

Bill Scott was the first sculptor to be elected President of the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1999 Scott became Chairman of the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW), and through his chairmanship raised £3.5 million for a new ESW building.
