Alan Davie (1920 – 2014)

Born in Grangemouth, Alan Davie was a painter and musician who studied at Edinburgh College of Art in the late 1930s. Davie’s paintings were often inspired by his time as a professional jazz saxophonist.

Much like his contemporary Elizabeth Blackadder, Davie was also influenced by the ideas of Zen, motivated to paint in an automatic and organic manner which was intended to express elements of his subconcious.

Ultimately, his work expresses a surrealist vision which draws upon his intersecting interests in music and psychoanalysis, particularly the works of Carl Jung. As well as this, his work often contains mysterious symbols found in sources such as American Indian pottery, maps, ancient rock carvings and Aboriginal art.
